How to get the best sound out of my receiver? - yamaha receiver hdmi no sound

I have a Yamaha RX-363 receiver with my cable box and Goin PS3 via HDMI and an HDMI cable from my receiver to the TV. I do not know if I should change my tv all the way or what is using the settings in the template for the 2 front speakers and a center channel and rear speakers. What must I do to get the best sound? And any suggestion that b good. Thanks
